What is Crab Island?

Crab Island is one of the main attractions in Destin, Fl and for good reason. Although back in the 1900’s it was an island above sea level, today it is a giant sandbar just north of the Destin bridge. Prior to 1974 and the wrath of Hurricane Eloise, what we refer to now as crab island was actually “Bird Island”. That storm leveled the little bit of sand peeking out and the name crab island was given by two little local girls, the name stuck and is now a top destination for tourist looking for a good time in the sun.

The sandbar ranges anywhere from 2-8 ft and provides a large area for boats and jet skis to anchor up and enjoy a day on the water. You can find areas as shallow as knee deep and many people get out of the boat and walk or float around. It is only accessible by boat and at certain times of the tide, the current will be too strong for kayaks, paddle boarders, and canoers to get through. Crab island is open from sun-up till sun-down to all visitors and locals alike.

In the last two years, the authorities have cracked down on boating under the influence and vendors on crab island. Hundreds of pontoons and jet ski rentals leave the docks every morning to hang out at crab island but if your plan is to have some drinks, pay the extra fee for a local captain, you wont regret it. Although in years past there wasn’t much authority, there is today and having a sober captain that knows the area is a great convenience and peace of mind while enjoying what this town has to offer.
