Spring Break

For me, growing up spring break was the prelude to summer, the appetizer of fun, the preamble of freedom! Spring break in Florida was like no other. I mean, it couldn’t be. We have the perfect warm weather (not too cold and not too hot), pools on every corner and beaches that will make your jaw drop. It was a dream come true. That week off from what seemed to be all the pressures of adolescence life meant the world to me. Nothing topped spring break!

My mother was a teacher so that meant my brother and I had a designated driver, and we didn’t have to find our way to an adventure. Spending all day at the pool never got old. All the neighborhood kids were there. Times were different and we were able to just ‘hang out’; laughing, joking and living the best teenage life one could ask for. As I got older, the epitome was ‘MTV Spring Break’ which included beach concerts with the hottest artist not limited to Aaliyah, Kid Rock, Lil Wayne, NSYNC, Usher, Destiny’s Child and others. We saw television programs of young adults having lots of fun and lots of libations. It looked so cool and so fun. It was the best of the 90’s 2000’s.

Now, my idea of the best spring break is relaxing on a nice beach or taking a boat out for wakeboarding and fishing with friends and family. Living my whole life in Florida, I feel I missed out on the beautiful beaches in the Emerald Coast. Specifically, Destin which is in the panhandle of Florida. The beaches are filled with white sand and the water has shades of blue that you imagine you could only see in a fairy tale. This is what gets me going. I now have a bigger and better appreciation of the nature and spring break. A chance to relax, reset and enjoy one of the greatest gifts to us all.
